Gym Body, Untrained Face? Your Jaw Is a Muscle. Here's the Greek Resin Lifters Use to Load It.
No lift in your program trains the masseter. Regular gum goes soft in seconds. Chios mastic is a raw tree resin that stays firm, so your jaw does real work every time you bite down.
Spend enough time around serious lifters and you notice a pattern. The body is dialed in. Shoulders, back, legs, all trained. The face doesn't match.
It isn't a mystery. The masseter, the muscle that runs from your cheekbone to the angle of your jaw, is the most visible muscle on a man's face. It responds to resistance like any other muscle. Load it, recover, repeat.
The problem: squats don't load it. Presses don't. Rows don't. You can run a perfect five-day split for years and your jaw stays, in the strict sense, untrained.
It's not your genetics. It's your food.
Our ancestors chewed hard, tough food every day. Modern food is soft. Bread is fluffy, meat is tender, almost nothing needs real chewing force.
A global study of human jaws found that jaw shape tracks diet, not ancestry: farming populations, who ate softer food, grew shorter, broader lower jaws than hunter-gatherers. The author links it to less chewing stress.
In other words, it's a load problem. And regular gum doesn't fix it.
- Regular gum is soft by design. It's a flavor delivery system, not resistance.
- Silicone "jaw trainers" put hard, uneven pressure on your teeth, and most end up in a drawer.
- Mastic is a raw resin. It starts as a hard tear and stays firm, so every bite is a rep.
What chewing-training studies found
Researchers have tested what happens when people add daily hard chewing. Here's what was published.
Adults who chewed a special hard gum 1 hour a day for 28 days significantly increased their maximum bite force by the midpoint, peaked at the end, and were still stronger 2 weeks after stopping. The weakest jaws gained the most.
In a randomized trial of 58 adults, chewing gum 3 times a day raised maximum bite force significantly by 3 months, vs no change in the control group.
20 minutes a day of chewing exercises for 6 weeks increased masseter muscle thickness and bite force vs a control group (adults 65 and older, measured by ultrasound).
Bonus: in a double-blind study, chewing mastic gum reduced plaque buildup on teeth compared with a placebo gum.
Train it like any other muscle
Mastic is far tougher than regular gum. Real resistance, the kind a muscle responds to.
Start with 10 minutes and build to 20 to 40. First sessions, your jaw will feel it. That's the point.
Some soreness the next morning is normal, like a new lifter after push day.
Keep it daily. Same time as a warm-up. Chew on your commute, at your desk or between sets.
One piece keeps its chew for a long time. Customers tell us they chew a single piece for hours, and it doesn't turn to mush. Pop it back in the tin and use it again the next day.
Athletes chew Gum of Gods

Athletes like Taylor Rapp chew Gum of Gods.
Why Gum of Gods, and not a cheap bag of mastic
Mastic grows commercially in one place on earth: the groves of Chios, Greece. A lot of what's sold online is small, yellow, stale and crumbles to powder when you chew it. That's no use for training.
| Regular gum | Cheap mastic | Gum of Gods | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resistance | Soft in seconds | Crumbles | Firm resin, chews for hours |
| Base | Synthetic "gum base" | Mastic, unclear origin | Chios mastic resin |
| Pieces | Uniform sticks | Small, yellow, often stale | Large white tears |
| Storage | Paper wrapper | Plastic bag | Heat resistant pocket tin |

How long should I chew each day?
Start with about 10 minutes and build up to 20 to 40 minutes as your jaw adapts. Some soreness at first is normal, like any new workout.
How do I chew it?
Warm a piece in your mouth for 20 to 30 seconds, then chew. It starts firm and stays firm. If it gets sticky, sip cold water. Store it in the tin and re-chew it for days.
Is it safe with fillings, braces or a clicky jaw?
Mastic is much firmer than regular gum. If you have crowns, braces, loose fillings or jaw pain, ask your dentist first and start with short sessions.
What does it taste like?
Fresh, woody and a little like pine. If plain resin sounds intense, Peppermint is the easiest first chew.
Isn't $38.99 a month a lot for gum?
One piece lasts far longer than a stick of regular gum, and you can rinse and reuse it. On the 3-month plan it works out to about $1.30 a day, and you get free gifts worth $114 with it.
