1

The routine. “It’s a lot.”

I brushed 3 times a day, scraped my tongue, rinsed, flossed after every meal. It’s a lot.

My mouth still felt dry and tasted off by 10am.

I thought this was just me. Then I found out how many women say the same thing.

2

The chew, in 10 seconds.

Chewing gets saliva flowing. The American Dental Association notes that the act of chewing gum increases salivary flow.

Mints dissolve in minutes. Mastic is a firm chew that lasts.

What the studies looked at.

In a controlled study, chewing mastic gum for 15 minutes left significantly fewer bacteria in saliva than a placebo gum, up to 2 hours later. (Aksoy 2006, small study, mastic chewing gum.)

In a small double-blind pilot study, salivary bacteria were significantly reduced during the 4 hours versus a placebo gum. (Takahashi 2003, small study, mastic chewing gum.)

Small studies of mastic chewing gum in healthy volunteers (20 to 25 people), not in women over 50. Not a health claim for Gum of Gods.

4

The label.

Regular gum base contains plastics.

Classic: Chios mastic resin. That’s the whole list.

It fits my routine.

After coffee, at 3pm, after dinner. The tin lives in my purse.

What to expect

  • It starts crumbly. Give it a minute, then it turns into a firm, smooth chew.
  • If it softens, a sip of cold water firms it up.
  • It tastes like a pine forest, not candy.
  • Start with 1 to 3 pieces, let them sit 15 to 30 seconds, then chew as long as you like.
  • Mastic gum is not recommended for people with dental work (fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures or braces).

★★★★★

“I am addicted to this stuff! I love that it is natural and well sourced. The taste is pretty neutral to me but is good. Like a hint of pine. It is crunchy at first but then chews like normal gum once you get it going.”

“Good just natural resin”
