Best Gum Without a Plastic Gum Base (2026): 6 Picks Compared

Short answer: Most chewing gum is made with a synthetic, plastic-based gum base. Gums without a plastic gum base use a plant instead: chicle latex (Simply Gum, True Gum) or Chios mastic resin (Gum of Gods, Greco). For a long, firm chew, Chios mastic resin is our top pick. One honest caveat: a 2025 pilot study presented at the American Chemical Society found chewing gum can release microplastics. Gum of Gods was not part of this study.

At a glance

Gum What the chew is made of
Gum of Gods Classic Pack Chios mastic resin, one ingredient
Gum of Gods Peppermint Mastic resin plus peppermint and stevia
Greco Gum Chios mastic resin, nothing added
Mystic Gum Chios mastic resin
Simply Gum Chicle base (brand markets its gum as made without plastic)
True Gum Plant based gum, made in Denmark (per brand)
Most supermarket gum Synthetic gum base (plastics)

Is there plastic in regular chewing gum?

Yes, in most of it. US rules for chewing gum base (21 CFR 172.615) allow synthetic polymers such as polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene, polyisobutylene, butyl rubber and butadiene-styrene rubber.

Those are the same families of materials used in glue, plastic bags and tire rubber. The label does not have to name them. It can just say "gum base".

That is why the chew in most supermarket gum never dissolves. It is a polymer. You chew it, the flavor fades in a few minutes, and the plastic part stays in your mouth until you spit it out.

What did the 2025 ACS chewing gum study find?

A 2025 pilot study presented at the American Chemical Society found chewing gum can release microplastics.

The UCLA team behind it tested five synthetic and five natural gum brands, with one person chewing seven pieces of each, and later published the results in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Letters (2025). The study also found natural and synthetic gums released similar amounts. Gum of Gods was not part of this study.

The researchers suggested chewing one piece longer instead of swapping in new pieces, because most particles came off early in the chew.

So what does that mean for you? Two things are true at once:

  • A gum with no plastic gum base is a real, label-level difference. You are not chewing a polymer for 20 minutes.
  • The study does not rank gums by particles. Natural and synthetic gums released similar amounts, and Gum of Gods was not tested.

We think the smart move is simple: pick a chew with no plastic gum base, then keep it in clean, sealed packaging.

What does "no plastic gum base" mean?

The chew has to come from a plant instead of a polymer. Today there are two real options:

  1. Tree latex (chicle). Sap from the sapodilla tree, the original base of chewing gum in Central America. Chicle gums add sweeteners, softeners and flavors so they feel like normal gum.
  2. Tree resin (Chios mastic). The hardened sap of the mastic tree, Pistacia lentiscus, from the Greek island of Chios. Pure mastic needs nothing added. The resin itself is the chew.

Learn more about the resin itself in what is mastic gum.

How do you read a gum label in 10 seconds?

  • "Gum base" with nothing after it: assume synthetic polymer.
  • "Chicle" or "natural gum base (chicle)": tree latex, a plant base instead of a synthetic one.
  • "Mastic resin" or "Pistacia lentiscus resin" as the only ingredient: one tree resin, nothing else.

Shorter is better. A one line ingredient list leaves nothing to hide.

What are the best gums without a plastic gum base in 2026?

We ranked six options on what the chew is made of, how long it lasts, how many ingredients it has and how the brand describes it on its own official page. Yes, two are ours. We tell you why.

1. Gum of Gods Classic Pack: best overall

Raw Chios mastic tears, nothing added. One ingredient, no plastic gum base, no sugar. Each tin holds 25 grams, about a 30 day supply.

It starts firm, softens as it warms and holds a long session, far longer than any chicle gum. We source from the Chios Mastic Growers Association and ship from the US so it spends less time in transit.

Mastiha is produced only in southern Chios. Shop The Classic Pack.

2. Gum of Gods Peppermint Pack: best for mint lovers

The same white resin tears, coated in natural peppermint flavoring and stevia. Same resin chew with no plastic gum base, sweeter start. Peppermint Pack.

3. Greco Gum: best mastic for soft or firm options

Greco is a brand we respect. Its product page lists "Whole crystallized resin from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia). Nothing added." and markets the gum as free of plastic (Greco's own claim). It sells nuggets (softer) and droplets (firmer) and publishes batch test results. A strong pick if you want to compare formats.

4. Mystic Gum: a small-bag mastic option

Mystic says its mastic is sourced from farmers in Chios and harvested by hand. Bags are a fair way to try mastic, though resin travels better in a tin in summer heat.

5. Simply Gum: best chicle gum

The best known chicle brand in the US markets itself as a gum made without plastic (its own claim) and sells a xylitol-sweetened line. Softer and sweeter than mastic, with many flavors. The chew fades faster than resin.

6. True Gum: best European chicle option

True Gum, made in Denmark, markets its gum as made without plastic, with simple ingredients (its own claim). Good if you want a familiar soft gum without a polymer base.

Why does mastic beat chicle for daily chewers?

It lasts. A chicle stick is soft in minutes. One or two mastic tears hold resistance for 20 to 40 minutes, which matters if you chew to work your face muscles or want a long, closed mouth chew as the day half of a sleep and breathing routine.

It is simpler. Pure resin needs no sweetener, softener or flavor. And mastic has decades of research behind it, which we collect in our Chios mastic gum benefits hub.

The trade-off is taste and price. Mastic tastes like pine and fresh herbs, which some people need a week to love. And it costs more than gum, for reasons we explain in why is mastic gum expensive.

How do you switch from regular gum without missing it?

  1. Swap one daily gum session for one mastic session.
  2. Warm one or two tears in your mouth for 20 to 30 seconds before chewing hard, so they soften instead of crumbling.
  3. If you want sweet, start with Peppermint; our flavor guide helps you choose.
  4. Keep a reusable gum tin in your bag so the habit travels and the resin stays clean.

Is resin or chicle gum harder on dental work?

Mastic is much firmer than chicle or regular gum.

If you have fragile dental work, crowns or jaw joint pain, ask your dentist before chewing firm resin every day.

How do you spot vague gum base claims?

Watch for "natural gum base" with no plant named, "plant based" with no ingredient list, or mastic that is small, dusty and yellow. Real Chios tears are large, pale and glassy. Our real vs fake mastic guide and mastic buyer's guide show what to look for. If you are wondering about us, read is Gum of Gods legit.

FAQ

Is there plastic in chewing gum?

Yes, in most of it. US rules allow synthetic polymers such as polyvinyl acetate and polyethylene in gum base, and labels can just say "gum base".

Which gums have no plastic gum base?

Gums whose chew comes from a plant: chicle gums like Simply Gum and True Gum, or tree resin like Chios mastic from Gum of Gods and Greco.

Does mastic gum have a plastic gum base?

Pure Chios mastic is a single tree resin with no gum base, so there is no plastic base to chew.

What did the 2025 ACS study find about natural gum?

A 2025 pilot study presented at the American Chemical Society found chewing gum can release microplastics. The study also found natural and synthetic gums released similar amounts. Gum of Gods was not part of this study.

Which gum without a plastic base lasts the longest?

Mastic resin. One or two tears hold a firm chew for 20 to 40 minutes, far longer than chicle gum.

How long does a tin of Gum of Gods last?

Each Classic Pack tin holds 25 grams, about a 30 day supply.
