Best Gum for Face Muscles (2026): 5 Hard Chews Ranked

Short answer: The best gum for face muscle work is one that stays hard for a long session. Plain Chios mastic resin (our Classic Pack) is a firm natural chew with no plastic gum base. Branded hard sticks such as JAWLINER are another option if you prefer a stick format. A 2024 trial of ordinary gum found daily chewing raised bite force; it found no change in jaw shape.

What makes a gum good for face muscle work?

Three things: resistance, time and ingredients. Soft gum gives your face muscles almost nothing to push against after five minutes. A good training chew starts firm and holds its resistance long enough to matter.

The trial we cite measured bite force, how hard you can bite down. In a 2024 randomized controlled trial (Jung HJ et al.), healthy adults who chewed ordinary gum three times a day had higher maximum bite force at three months than a control group. The authors linked the gain to a larger tooth contact area, not bigger muscles. Masseter thickness and jaw shape did not change in that trial.

So we rank chews on the thing that is measured: how hard they push back and for how long. If you want the science in full, read Gum for Face Muscles: what chewing research shows.

How did we rank the best hard chews for face muscles?

  • Starting hardness: how much effort the first two minutes take.
  • Time under chew: how long it keeps resistance before it goes soft.
  • Ingredients: regular gum base contains plastics under US rules (21 CFR 172.615). Chews with no plastic gum base rank higher.
  • Brand claims: what each company says on its own official page, quoted and linked.

What are the best gums for face muscle work in 2026?

1. Gum of Gods Classic Pack: best overall

Raw Chios mastic tears, nothing added. The resin crumbles for 20 seconds, then comes together into a firm, piney chew that is far tougher than regular gum. One or two tears hold resistance for a long session.

The Classic Pack is plain Chios mastic resin, so there is no plastic gum base and no sugar. Each tin is 25 grams, about a 30 day supply. We source from the Chios Mastic Growers Association and ship from the US. The 1-Month Supply is $44.99 and the 3-Month Supply is $116.98, which adds free mouth tape and nasal strips. Shop The Classic Pack.

2. JAWLINER: best for a branded hard stick

JAWLINER says it invented facial fitness chewing gum and has made it since 2018. It sells Hard and Ultra Hard sticks, both sugar-free, and both ingredient lists start with gum base. The brand recommends 10 to 15 minutes every other day. A strong pick if you want a branded, high resistance stick.

For JAWLINER's ingredients, stated hardness and chew limits next to Chios mastic, see JAWLINER vs mastic gum.

3. Greco Gum: best mastic for choosing firmness

Greco sells Chios mastic in two formats: nuggets (softer) and droplets (harder). Its page notes the gum is much harder than ordinary gum and tells people with fragile teeth or TMJ trouble to check with a dentist, which is good advice for any hard chew.

4. Mystic Gum: a mastic starter kit

Mystic sells mastic it says is sourced directly from its farmers in Chios and harvested by hand. Its starter kit includes a reusable tin. A fair way to try resin.

5. Silicone jaw trainers: strength sets, not gum

Not food and not gum. They give very high resistance in short sets. Because the load is so high, they are easy to overdo. If you use one, go slow.

Is gum or a jaw trainer better for face muscles?

Gum and resin let you chew naturally for longer at a moderate load. Trainers load the jaw hard and fast.

Two lab studies of long chewing sessions found fatigue rises with load and time. In a 2001 study, 40 minutes of very hard gum raised jaw pain and fatigue scores, which fell almost to baseline after about 10 minutes of rest. In a 2020 study, 40 or 60 minutes of chewing caused fatigue lasting up to about 20 minutes, with mild pain only in the 60-minute session. That is why we prefer a firm natural chew at a steady pace you can repeat every day over a device you can overdo in a minute.

How long should you chew for face muscle work each day?

Start with one 10 minute session a day and build to 30 to 40 minutes a day total over about four weeks, split into sessions. Stop on joint pain, clicking with pain, or if your jaw catches. Mastic is not recommended for people with dental work (fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures) or braces. Ask your dentist if you are unsure. The full week-by-week routine and research notes are in Gum for Face Muscles.

Why choose a training chew with no plastic gum base?

If you chew 30 minutes a day, you are spending a lot of time with that chew in your mouth. Regular gum base contains plastics, and a 2025 pilot study presented at the American Chemical Society found chewing gum can release microplastics. The study also found natural and synthetic gums released similar amounts. Gum of Gods was not part of this study. Read the details in our guide to gum without a plastic gum base and microplastics in chewing gum guide.

Mastic is a tree resin with no gum base. Mastiha is produced only in southern Chios. And mastic has a long research record of its own, collected in our Chios mastic gum benefits hub.

How do you get the most from a face-muscle chew?

What should you avoid in a hard training chew?

  • Soft gum sold as a hard training chew. If it is soft after five minutes, it is regular gum in new packaging.
  • Vague "gum base" labels. "Gum base" on the label with no detail can include synthetic polymers allowed under 21 CFR 172.615.
  • Old, yellow, dusty mastic. Stale resin crumbles and never comes together. Fresh Chios tears are large, pale and glassy.
  • Chewing through pain. No gum is worth a sore jaw joint. Back off, rest, and ask a dentist if pain lasts.

Does hard chewing change face shape?

Many of our customers say they feel their face muscles working. The 2024 trial we cite found that chewing ordinary gum raised bite force. It measured jaw shape and masseter thickness, and neither changed.

Our honest advice: chew for strength and habit. If you want to know which mastic to trust, read our mastic buyer's guide and real vs fake mastic. Wondering about price? See why mastic gum costs more.

FAQ

What is the best gum for face muscle work?

For a firm, long lasting chew with no plastic gum base, plain Chios mastic resin like the Gum of Gods Classic Pack. For a branded hard gum stick, JAWLINER is a common pick.

Does hard chewing actually work your face muscles?

Daily gum chewing raised maximum bite force in a 2024 randomized trial. That trial did not find a change in jaw shape or masseter thickness.

How long should I chew for face muscle work?

Start with 10 minutes a day and build to 30 to 40 minutes total over about four weeks, split into sessions.

Is mastic gum harder than regular gum?

Yes. Mastic starts firm, softens as it warms and holds resistance much longer than soft supermarket gum.

Can hard chewing hurt my jaw?

Too much, too fast can cause muscle fatigue and soreness. Stop on joint pain or if your jaw catches, and see a dentist if it continues.

Does a hard training chew have a plastic gum base?

Plain mastic resin does not. Many hard gum sticks use a gum base, so check the label.
